40 years and still going strong
There is No Substitute For Experience
Peter Langley Joined the business at the tender age of 16 (though he was working Saturdays from 14!). To celebrate the occasion we had a chat with the man himself to find out how it all began, what he loves about designing, and what he does when he’s not at his drawing board!
I started working at Langleys… from the age of 14 on Saturdays, delivering firewood to the locals and bagging shavings. Back then Langleys didn’t make furniture, but manufactured ‘Coffin sets’ for companies like the Co-op. As the market changed, so did what we manufactured. We transfered our woodworking skills and began making fitted furniture.
I learnt how to design… on the job. All my skills have been acquired from experience and listening and learning from mentors. It’s the client that ultimately pushes us to design new and more exciting ideas.
My favourite part of the job… is the actual planning of each room and seeing the end result: the concept to completion.
If I could give any advice on designing a new home from scratch it would be… to start from the inside out. Look at the rooms themselves and how they will work together in a logical way so that the space is used to its’ full potential. Once that is done you can decide where to put the walls! Ideally you should have your designer and architect working together.
The thing I most love about Bolton… is that although you have the convenience of the town and shops nearby, you can be in the countryside in 10 minutes.
If I’m not at my drawing board, you will probably find me… either running up a hill or in Turkey by the pool. I love doing both, but the running is probably better for me!
